They didn’t.
In case you missed it, McCain said at the debates he hoped he would be able to and when pressed said, “Sure.” Obama said, “We haven’t seen the language yet.” Neither of them voted.
Some said McCain was going back to Washington to “do his job.” McCain hasn’t voted since March 14 and Obama since July 9. Did I mention that neither of them voted on the bailout vote bill?
Way to lead, guys.
Wait a second. Wasn’t this a House vote and aren’t the two candidates senators? They both voted for the plan yesterday.
The senate votes on items and then they go to the House. They Senate voted on the bill on Sunday (9/28/08), and then it was voted in the House on Monday (9/29/08). The order of a bill getting passed is always Senate, House, President. Then, it went back to the drawing board on Tuesday, and the Senate voted on it Wednesday night and the House will reconvene to vote on the bailout on Friday.
My point was all their talk last week about suspending campaigns until a bill got passed, blah, blah, blah. And then neither of them voted on it.
However, since then, I realized they probably didn’t need to fly back to Washington to go vote on it, unless it was a close vote, as how people are going to vote is known ahead of time.
Correction: I was confused because the Senate was voting first this time. That’s because they are voting on a bill from the House that had an ammendment. The ammendment contained the bailout portion of the bill.
Oh, and BTW, I think I’m against it now more then I was, even though my most recent blog post suggests otherwise. I was just trying to explain the effects of passing or not passing. I contacted both my senators (McCain and Kyl) last week to tell them that I thought the fiscally conservative thing to do was to not vote for the bailout. I guess they didn’t hear me. All the House Members from Arizona voted against the first version of the bailout.
And just for fun, the bill started as a 3-page document. Congress’s 1st revision: 110 pages. Congress’s 2nd revision: 450+ pages, but the bailout portion is essentially the same.
